More Ministry of Labour fines
The Ministry continues to fine companies in Ontario for not protecting their workers.
A railroad Manufacturer was fine $140,000 for a hydraulic press incident. A worker had his arm in the press when a second worker activated the press, which pinched the man's arm, causing permanent damage. The press' infrared light beam, which stops the press when something is inside, was not properly adjusted at the time of the accident. In addition the workers involved had not been trained on the press. The company pleaded guilty to failing to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker to protect his health and safety.
This incident could have easily been avoided if the company had proper training procedures in place for the press and had used those procedures to train their workers. Workers new to a job even in the same company are four times more likely to get injured in the first month than they are at any other time. These new workers need extra supervision.
