Jail Time for Company Directors
Two directors were sentenced to jail time after pleading guilty to safety violations which lead to the death of a worker at the company's Brampton -warehouse. The worker had been using a machine called an order picker, a modified forklift with a platform attached to the back of it. The platform did not have a guardrail and the workers was not wearing fall protection equipment. The worker was found dead on the floor beside the machine.
The two directors were sentenced to 25 days in jail each and ordered to take a Health and Safety course. The company pleaded guilty to two safety violations and was fined $250,000.
Accidents like this one can be easily avoided when a company implements a Health and Safety program, which includes hazard identification and risk assessments. A proper H&S program also includes employee and supervisor training, safety rules for all equipment and employee input into the workplace safety.
